TIKEN JAH FAKOLY - DISCOGRAPHY: (Reggae Singer)

TIKEN JAH FAKOLY - PROFILE:

Artist: Tiken Jah Fakoly
Job: Singer, Songwriter & Musician
Location: Ivory Coast
Music: Reggae

Biography:
by Christian Lacoste

Tiken Jah Fakoly can be seen as a modern griot responsible for passing along West African history through oral tradition. His stage name comes from his ancestor Fakoly Koumba Fakoly Daba, a lieutenant in Malinke’s 1235 war for independence. Moussa Doumbia was born in 1968 in Odienné, located in the North West of Ivory Coast. He did many jobs including farming with his parents before starting his band in 1989, named ‘The Djelys’.

They did their first concert in a packed theatre in Odienné in April 1991, in front of a curious audience. Issued in 1993 and 1994, the first two albums sold locally, but went practically unnoticed nationwide, due to a lack of promotion. The songs were written in Dioula, which didn’t help the marketing strategy, Dioula being a language spoken mainly in the North. In 1995, Tiken Jah started to read more about politics, which influenced the writing process of his third album.

At the time, he teamed up with Thierry and Sophie Gros, two French citizens volunteering in Ivory Coast, who believed in his talent and played a key role in his career. In summer 1996, the album ‘Mangercratie’ (Eating-cracy)* was released and by early 1997, it was on heavy rotation in Ivory Coast were it sold over 500 000 copies. Two years later, it was distributed in France where it also gained listener & critical praise: It was the beginning of an international exposure.

The same year, the fourth album ‘Cours d’histoire’ (History Course) was released in West Africa. Politics, racial discrimination and colonization were among the themes making this album one of his most praised by Africans.

The 2002 album ‘Françafrique’ was recorded at the legendary Tuff Gong studios, produced by Wailers’ Tyrone Downie and featuring Sly & Robbie among many musicians. It won best reggae album of the year at RFI’s ‘Les Victoires de la Musique’ (Radio France Internationale). When handed the trophy, he used his microphone to denounce the ongoing French military camps in African countries, 40 years after independence. He then engaged in a high voltage performance of the title track.

In 2004, Tiken Jah used his successful formula and recorded another powerful opus with ‘Coup de gueule’ (Punch in the face)*. This album features some of the strongest material to date, including ‘Plus rien ne m’étonne’ (Nothing surprises me)* and ‘Quitte le pouvoir’ (Leave Power)*, a song directed towards African leaders who can’t call it quits. With ‘Tonton d’America’ (Uncle America)* he brings a criticism over American imperialism.

The 2007 album ‘L’African’ featured ‘African à Paris’, a noticeable reworking of Sting’s ‘English Man In New York’. No one can ignore his social commentary directed towards female circumcision, more accurately described as genital mutilation on ‘Non à l’excision’ (No to circumcision)*, a practice widespread in many African countries. He made a conscious effort of bringing up front traditional African musical instruments such as kora and balafon in his songs. This album also established the debute of a partnership with producer Jonathan Quarmby.

The albums ‘African Revolution’ (2010) and ‘Dernier appel’ (Last Call)* (2014) were well received without being as successful as the previous three. In 2015, he paid tribute to the reggae artists that he grew up listening to by recording the album ‘Racines’ (Roots). It features classics like ‘War Ina Babylon’, ‘Zimbabwe’ and ‘Is It Because I’m Black?’. As of 2017, the EPs ‘Radio Libre’ (Radio Without Boundaries)* (2009) and ‘Alerte’ (Warning)* (2012) remain exclusive to West Africa. The album ‘Le Caméléon’ (The Chameleon) (2000) was also exclusive for many years before being released in France & Canada. The West African versions of his international albums often feature exclusive tracks.

His recording and touring band is still named The Djelys and the musician lineup has been fairly consistent over the years. Since 2000, they were very busy touring across Europe, Africa and Canada. Fakoly’s name is regularly included on European summer festivals’ line up. They have no trouble selling out venues in West Africa, France and Quebec, the French-speaking Canadian province.

Most of the songs are written in French or Dioula with a few in English, such as ‘Political War’ and ‘Africa Dub’. As of 2017, Tiken Jah Fakoly hasn’t gained noticeable success within the English-speaking countries like Alpha Blondy was able to do. Key elements are there: strong lyrical content, charisma & heavy promotion… The French label Barclay (Universal) which distributes his music, didn’t focus on promoting him towards an English market. Since 2005, Tiken Jah Fakoly has had a distribution deal with the UK label Wrasse records.

After receiving serious death threats during the 2002-2007 Ivory Coast Civil War, Tiken Jah was forced into exile. He fled to the neighbor Malian country, where he has lived since 2003. In 2006, he opened his own studio ‘H. Camara’ in Bamako, named after his Ivorian comedian friend who was killed in 2003. He went back to Ivory Coast for the first time in 2007.

That same year, he was declared persona non grata in Senegal after speaking his mind onstage in Dakar regarding the Senegalese government. During the same period, he produced a few african artists through his ‘Fakoly Productions’ and launched the project ‘Un concert une école’ (One Concert One School), where the money collected during specific concerts will be invested to build up schools. As of 2017, six of them were built in Ivory Coast (2), Mali, Niger, Burkina Faso and the Republic of Guinea.

He often refers to his musical influence as Burning Spear, Bob Marley, U-Roy, Culture & The Gladiators. He collaborated on many musicians’ album. He performed duets with Ken Boothe, Jah9, Steel Pulse, Alpha Blondy, Yaniss Odua, Bernard Lavilliers and the list goes on. He joined several collective projects including Unité en Guinée, Espoir pour Haïti, Kolectif Revey Twa (Reggae contre Sida) and Africa Stop Ebola.

The singer’s career is very well documented in the 2008 book ‘L’Afrique ne pleure plus, elle parle’ (Africa doesn’t cry anymore, it speaks)*. When not recording and touring, Tiken Jah spends some time on his farm. One of his new goals is to promote the value of African agriculture towards generations that embraced rural exodus. He keeps his Facebook page active by posting African political and historical texts.
